05/17/01 Beginnings by Jake Davenport
In just a few days, I'll be a dad - hard to believe! When Junior Davenport finally arrives, life for my wife and I will transform irrevocably into a mixture of our current routines and ones totally alien to us right now. While it's scary to contemplate what lies ahead, it's far more exciting to consider the amazing experiences that we'll have with this new addition to our family. We're not giving up our "old" lives - we're moving toward new horizons. And so, too, is the Internet.
The wireless world is coming, with text messaging poised to play a vital role in the next phase of worldwide communications. The Web is no longer an infant - technology to support data exchange outside of the presentation layer is maturing, and access to high-end development tools is both ready and affordable. Microsoft is hoping to convince the world that renting software is the best route to go (don't be convinced!) and Linux (the PC version of UNIX), backed by big players like IBM, is moving into the mainstream marketplace. The open-source movement is gaining acceptance in the commercial sector. Everyone finally has email.
As the technology world evolves, it can be intimidating and overwhelming to consider the countless innovations springing up daily, especially while trying to determine how what we have today will fit in with what the future will bring. But ultimately these fears of the unknown should be outweighed by the promise of a more empowered, capable, and informed world that such amazing advancements can open up for all of us.
Staying focused on your business goals and remembering that technology is simply a means to an end is the surest way of sifting through the mountain of possibilities before us. Look for new opportunities as technology opens the doors to them, but most of all be sure to use what you have access to today to your greatest advantage. And, of course, enjoy what is to come!
